It’s easy to ignore Google’s page rank, and it’s just as easy to get obsessed by it. Here are a few things to consider when you are trying to get your website ranked more highly in the biggest search engine out there.
Google’s 0 - 10 ranking system can be seen by using something like SEO-Quake, a plugin for Firefox and Google’s own browser “Chrome”. It’s little more than a calculated “vote” by Google’s algorithm to determine how popular a web-page is, but, like most other people, I don’t know what their algorithm is, and if I did, it would most likely be changed by tomorrow.
Ranking
Ranking well pretty much means that lots of other sites are linking to you, so that page is considered “important”. For example, SEO Quake now has ANOTHER vote, because I’ve just put a link to it in this paragraph!
The only point I want to make today is this: if you are trying to outrank certain webpages for a given keyword, DON’T BOTHER trying if the page you are trying to compete with has a ranking above 3. You will simply be wasting your time.
Be Practical
In practice, what this means is that, if you type a keyword phrase into Google’s search box, the first page of the results (SERPS) will show you the top 10 pages for THAT phrase. Look at the page rank (using SEO Quake or similar) and if it shows that it’s above 3, you’ll know NOT to compete using that keyword.
Look for ANOTHER keyword, and then do the same thing. As soon as you find a number 1 position that has a page rank of below three (preferably a zero), then THAT is the keyword phrase to use, so you can have more chance of outranking all the other web pages out there that are appearing for that term.
