Making money online should be safe. After all, you don’t have a store with a cash-register full of money waiting for somebody to come and point a gun at you demanding it, right?
The Gun IS Pointing At You
Working online isn’t necessarily safer than working in a gas-station, at least where the money is concerned. Yes, you’re physically safer and the worst you should experience is some tendonitis, or maybe carpel tunnel syndrome! However, because your identity details are at risk, your money can be too.
What Harm Can They Really Do?
These cyber-thieves have also been known to get simple details that seem quite harmless and make use of them by opening up accounts at other websites and making comments and statements on your behalf.
The current answer to having your identity stolen is to have password protected entry to your websites. This could be Facebook, MySpace or one of a thousand other sites.
While Password protection DOES work and work well, remember them is often a problem. You can also use a password manager program, but these can fail if your PC crashes of course, then you have to re-enter all the details again (which you’ve obviously stored somewhere in case of just such an event!?).
Here’s A Possible Solution
There’s a new company called OpenID which aims to change all of this. OpenID.net is an organization that is in the process of creating a platform that will allow any number of passwords to be entered and only ONE password ever has to be remembered.
OpenID eliminates the need for multiple usernames across different websites, simplifying your online experience.
They’re currently in the adoption phase and are becoming more and more popular. As large organizations like AOL, Microsoft, Sun, Novell, etc. begin to accept and provide OpenID’s, it is estimated that there are over 160-million OpenID enabled URIs with nearly ten-thousand sites supporting OpenID logins.
I think it’s worth your while checking it out for yourself, and I’d like to hear your comments about it, positive or negative. You can start by just using them for simple low-risk applications, and if you’re comfortable with that, perhaps move on to something a little (a LITTLE) more important to you.
And here’s the kicker…………..you MAY already have an OpenID and not know it!
Check it out HERE.
Oh, and did I tell you, it’s FREE!
Luke.

Or else use Glynx - an OpenID solution that works p2p from your PC without passwords - so no server stores your userid/passwords anywhere.
