A lot of people seem to think that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is far too slow to be of any real benefit to them. However, not only are a lot of SEO techniques important, they will benefit you and your site for years to come.
LONG-TAIL KEYWORDS
These are ‘keywords’ are nothing more than a series of words that you might type into a search-engine. Rarely do people use just ONE word as a keyword search these days. Why? Because people want SPECIFIC information, and the more words they use to describe what they want information about, the more accurate (they hope) the results will be. You should understand that ranking well for a particular word is VERY difficult, but ranking for a string of words (long-tail keywords) is a lot easier.
This is because the search-engines can find the word easier, which means you can rank well with them faster.
WHAT YOU SHOULD BE DOING
To rank well for a long-tail keyword, you should firstly FIND the most appropriate keyword (long-tail that is) for your site. Use the Google Keyword Tool (or another of your choice) and type in the single word that you think MOST describes your website. Then, use whatever the tool returns as results as your long-tail keyword. Then it’s simply a matter of using THAT term (keyword) in your blog entries, titles, tags etc. to make sure that the search-engines find you.
BE REALISTIC
DON”T fool yourself! To make sure that your search-term REALLY IS what’s being searched for, go to some forums on that subject and see what STRINGS of words or being used there. This will confirm or refute what the keyword tool you used is saying.
Opimizing your website for the search-engines (like Google or Yahoo) to find isn’t as difficult as you may think. The engines are (currently) looking for WORDS! Use the words MOST appropriate to your website and you WILL be found by them.
A WORD OF WARNING
But be warned. Use words that EVERYBODY else (or at least TOO MANY others) are using, and you will find your website ranked somewhere MUCH lower than you want it to be. The moral of this story is, make sure you have SOME kind of readership/market, but make sure it’s not SO large that everybody ELSE is already in on the action.
