Huh!??? Surely money is worth whatever is printed on it…………isn’t it? Nope, not even close! Money has no inherent value at all. Sure, your society will accept it while it’s backed by a government (if the government in question is stable) but if money had a FIXED value, then why does the price of things vary so much from month to month or year to year? (Like Oil and gasoline for example).
Well, to answer this, you can read a series of articles I wrote here “Why Does The Cost Of Living Keep Rising?”
However, this isn’t the point I’m trying to make. There are LOTS of reasons why the SAME thing will cost different amounts depending on WHERE you are in the world and WHEN you are. So who determines the value of money? Think about it for just a second, check out this great video, then read on.
Okay, so it’s not so great…………..BUT (and it’s a big but, riddles with cellulite and struggling to defy gravity) the lyrics talk only about money as an abstract. “I WANT MONEY”. ‘Money’ being what? Well, it’s never specified in the song is it. So, WHO puts the value on money?
Yes, you’ve guessed it, it’s ……………………….YOU!
Nobody else CAN put value on money. Advertisers try to, Preachers try to, manufacturers try to……..but in the end ONLY YOU can determine what money is worth.
How? Well, if you think about it, some people would pay over $300,000 for a wristwatch, which does nothing more than a $40 wristwatch (and sometimes the one costing 300k doesn’t do as good a job as the $40 one!). So, YOU and only you can decide what the money that you have made is worth.
Most people in the U.S. earn between $20,000 and $100,000 per year. This immediately shows that things priced in the $1 - $50 range would be considered inexpensive…………unless the $50 item was a loaf of BREAD!! In Germany just before the rise of the Nazi regime, a loaf of bread would be on the market for the equivalent of thousands of dollars.
When I was in Poland many years ago, I was worth over 2 million Zloty! But that was about $120! The Polish government has since “re-evaluated” the currency, so this ridiculous situation has changed now.
So, the society you live in and the current year determine a great deal about the value of money, but ultimately it’s you who have to decide what something is worth. If gasoline was $5 a gallon, is that expensive? Well, what a gallon of beer cost you?
Money earned is ALWAYS worth MORE than money won (or stolen).
Earn your money by providing value to others! It’ll make you feel GREAT.
Here’s a good place to start learning. It shows how people also value WORDS and how you can make money from this fact.
